RULES

Students will perform ONE (1) selection.

Materials must be drawn from published plays written for the theatre and found here on the approved Thespy site.

Poetry, fiction, screenplays, and lyrics will not be allowed.

Only one character may be used.

The selection may not exceed (3) three minutes.

No costumes may be used.

Hand props may be used if integral to the scene. Integral is defined as a prop that is physically used by the actor.

Junior Thespian Duet Acting
RULES

Junior Thespian Group Acting
WHAT TO PREPARE
In a Group Acting performance, Junior Thespians should prepare a non-musical scene from a published work written for the theatre (play or musical) that does not exceed five (5) minutes in length. Junior Thespians must also adhere to the following:

A group scene is defined as a performance for three to eight (3-8) players. In each case, every participant must be actively involved in the scene chosen for performance.

Review the Rights & Licensing page to ensure that the chosen material is eligible to be performed for Thespy adjudication.

MATERIALS
In the Group Acting category, up to sixteen (16) chairs and one (1) table may be safely used during the performance. Sitting on, laying across, and/or standing upon a chair is usually acceptable so long as safety is the priority (i.e., if a chair has wheels, it would not be considered safe to stand upon). Junior Thespians may not stand on a table. Junior Thespians should take this into consideration when rehearsing their entry in case adjustments to blocking are needed in the adjudication room.

Junior Thespian Pantomime
RULES
-
One to eight performers are allowed.
-
No props or costumes.
-
No theatrical makeup.
-
No lip syncing or audible sounds by the performer.
-
Not to exceed five (5) minutes.
-
There are to be no lyrics in any music selection.
-
This pantomime must be the original creation of the student(s).

MATERIALS

Eight (8) sturdy, straight-backed, armless chairs will be provided. This will be the only permissible furniture.

A hard surface floor will be provided.

If you wish to use a recorded track, we will provide a set of speakers and an auxiliary cable you may use to plug into your portable device. You are welcome to bring your own CD player or iPod dock.

Junior Thespian Improvisation
RULES
-
Two performers will receive a prompt from the judges’ table immediately following the students’ introduction which ends with their troupe number.
-
Time will start once the prompts are in the actors’ hands.
-
The students have up to 5 minutes from the time they get the prompt to the end of their performance.
-
Any material that is not audience appropriate (i.e. language and adult content) is not allowed.
-
The Timekeeper’s hand will go up at 4:45 as a visual warning for time.
-
The scene ends when ‘time’ is called by the Timekeeper or when the actors call ‘scene.’

All Musical Theatre performances must be accompanied by pre-recorded, non-vocal musical accompaniment in MP3, M4A, WAV, or AIFF format (must be an audio file, not a video file). It is strongly recommended that the file be downloaded onto a device (e.g., smartphone, computer) rather than relying on a streaming file as internet connectivity can be unreliable in various settings. No live music including accompanists is permitted.

Review the Rights & Licensing page to ensure that the chosen material is eligible to be performed for Thespy adjudication. Purchasing a vocal selection book or musical score does not secure the rights to perform the work for Thespy adjudication.
